The World Trade Organization (WTO) was established in 1995 as the successor to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). The WTO deals with the global rules of trade between nations, with its main function being to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible. The WTO's dispute settlement system is a central element in providing security and predictability to the multilateral trading system.
This year, in Model Courts of Justice, the WTO Dispute Settlement Body will resolve trade disputes between member states, examining compliance with WTO agreements, trade restrictions, and the balance between free trade principles and legitimate policy objectives. The panel will analyze questions of international trade law, market access, and national treatment obligations.
